Beginners Scrapbooking to get you started

I'm not what you would call a 'scrapbooker', but I do love doing smash book pages. However I have recently got into paper crafts and creating scrapbook pages and layouts as a result of recent workshops at Michelle Mills' Craft Club and as part of National Scrapbook Day, which I really enjoyed. So have a read for a few tips for starting out scrapbooking and using your smash book ideas in your layouts.
This post contains an affiliate link, but it is for a product I love and use myself. It means I will get a small percentage of the price if you purchase it yourself.

Getting Started with a Scrapbook

I have two ways of creating scrapbook pages. The first way is to use 12x12 paper and to scrap directly onto the paper. These can then be stored in a 12x12 box or a scrapbook album (which is something I still need to buy). The second method is in a scrapbook.  You can get many different sizes, the main being again 12x12 scrapbook paper. My scrapbook above is a Hobbycraft book in 8x8. The smaller books are perfect for using the 6x6 scrapbook paper kits which you pick up very cheaply and these also make perfect backgrounds for photos on the larger pages.

I don't normally make pages with a lot of white space, but I must admit I quite enjoyed it. I also managed to add some watercolour in to the mix.

Following Scrapbook Sketches

The page above follows what is known as a scrapbook sketch. This is an outline drawing or sketch of a page that you can use a guide. If you search it in Google it will bring thousands of layouts you can have a go at recreating. The Beatles one above was only my second proper scrapbook page for part of a challenge as part of the National Scrapbook Day over at For The Love Of Pretty Paper (UK Scrapbooking Group). If you are stuck for inspiration simple sketches are a great way to start out.

Scrapbook Kit and Resources

You will definitely need a good glue. Use whatever glue is the best for you. For me it is a pritt stick, I find it works well. Obviously you will need a variety of papers.  12x12 and 6x6 papers are the best to get, which you can get from ebay, Amazon or Scrapbook shops on Etsy. I use a paper trimmer as I find it easier than cutting everything out individually.

A roll of double sided tape is a must too and a kit of various embellishments, which can be anything - sequins, flowers, stickers, washi tape, pearls, enamel dots, buttons, old keys - go with the flow and have a look in your craft stash as I bet you have a lot you can use already. Final Scrapbook Tips

Finally, don't be afraid to experiment with layouts.  I took my smashbook and creative journaling style on-board with the image above. I used a variety of vintage ephemera as this was inspired by the photo of the graffiti from the wall of The Cavern Club which I pulled the colour inspiration from and included in the layout.  Use your photo / photos as a guide as to what to include on the page and just be creative with it. You can also experiment with the photos, varying the angles, cutting them in half and putting a gap in between them, adding borders and different edging effects, there really are no limits. Happy Scrapbooking!

I hope that you enjoyed the read.
