Acrylic Paint Art Journal Techniques

Art Techniques for Art Journaling - Brayer rolling and scraping. Kerrymay._.Makes
Feel free to pin me on Pinterest
The third installment in the Art Journaling Mini Series is all about scraping and rolling acrylic paint to create different effects for your mixed media backgrounds and art / creative journals.

These techniques are so easy to achieve they could also be done with your children, great to keep them occupied during lockdown.

Scraping Paint Technique:

Open up a new page in your journal or use a canvas or mixed media paper and apply a few thick blobs (love that word) of acrylic paint (see the range here at CraftStash, 20% off first orders too).

Step One: I have used three colours placed evenly at the top of the page: an electric blue, then white and bright pink in the photos and then used yellows and orange in the video example below.
Step 2: Get an old credit or gift card and starting at the top of the page where the paint is simply scrape the card down the page spreading the paint.  Technically you could leave it there, or you may want to use a make up sponge (see tutorial 2) to mix and blend the paint slightly.

You could continue here by adding some brayer rolling into the mix... but you don't have to of course.

I got this Brayer Roller very cheaply off Amazon. Simply add another small blob of paint and begin rolling the paint around the page or canvas... that's it, yes really!

You can mix things up by combining several colours, changing the direction of the rolling and adding textured paste or matte medium to it to create additional texture. You can then decorate with stamps, journaling or your art once it has dried.

So there we have it, get creative on the cheap and try some new techniques.

Be sure to check out the other two tutorials in the mini series and check out the art goodies giveaway in post two - now closed, but you can still show me using the hashtag #kmmam (I really do want to see your work and how you have applied the techniques).
